The Good Shepherd, who leads the flock to the fold and brings the lost sheep on his shoulders, is a symbol of Christ's sacrifice for humankind. The statue indends to represent Christ as the "Good Shepherd", as well as the victim, whose sacrifice has given men the salvation. The original sculpture is the most famous archaeological discovery located in the Vatican Museums and is undoubtedly one of the most symbolic images of early Christianity; it is indeed the first depiction of Jesus.
